Kevin McClain (PDGA #197799) to share his whimsical disc golf fantasy.

A Short History of a Disc Golf Relationship

2009

Kevin had never met anyone who played disc golf. He just thought it looked like a fun activity.

He visits a disc golf park with his wife and young son, a handful of discs, and complete ignorance of the sport.

It was a good day & a great memory.

Matt and Kevin occasionally play. Matt regains interest and slowly begins teaching Kevin some fundamentals.

December 2021

Kevin and his son play their first PDGA sanctioned tournament at Garden Grove Disc Golf Course in Pleasant Garden, NC.

They play the course blind. Kevin comes in close to the bottom of the field of in the MA3 division! His son, as a testament to his endurance, finishes and wins the <M15 division, as the only competitor.

2022

Within a short period, their cohort grows to about a dozen members. They organize rounds at a variety of local courses, compete for tags and play a season double-elimination championship series.

After making a C2 putt, Kevin is jokingly called ‘McChainz’ by his cardmates, a recognition that, occasionally, a great throw landed!

Disc golf became a major source of fun.

2023 -2024

Kevin begins to play multiple times a week.

By Dec 2024, Kevin has played over 90 courses and 700 rounds, including over 40 sanctioned events.

But Kevin comes to the realization that too much emphasis on competition hurts his relationship to the game.

January 2025

Out of his love of the game, and his friendships, Kevin commits to finding a better balance and to keep disc golf fun!

Kevin starts sharing recordings of rounds as way to encourage recreational disc golfers.

In addition, being a lover of literature and history, Kevin spins a tale about disc sport before disc golf and starts creating related artifacts.

Spring 2025

Kevin shares his whimsical story of disc sport in a different era and some of the art inspired by it.
